Netherlands – Welcome to the Esperantotunnel in Groningen. This modern bicycle and pedestrian tunnel runs under a railtrack and connects different parts of the city and is used daily by hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians. Today, we’ll take a walk through this unique passageway while the flow of everyday traffic passes by on both sides of us.
Construction
The tunnel was constructed as part of the Aanpak Ring Zuid project, one of the largest infrastructure developments in Groningen. Although most of the tunnel structure was already completed in August 2017, it remained inaccessible for several years while major work continued in the surrounding area. This included the demolition of the southern section of Groningen’s elevated ring road and the removal of its foundations, which blocked access to the tunnel. After years of construction and redevelopment, the Esperantotunnel finally opened in 2025, providing a safe and convenient route for cyclists and pedestrians.
